A Little About The Cottage on Main Street
The Cottage on Main Street is a casual luxury residence built around the 1940’s as a carriage house to go with the original residence built in 1903. It’s tucked behind the main house overlooking the tree-lined backyard.
Steve and Karen Anderson, the current owners, have resided in the main house for the last ten years. They renovated and restored the main house in 2013, remodeling the kitchen, master bath and refinishing the original hardwood floors.
The Cottage was renovated in 2014 and designed to create a comfortable level of elegance for guests with a new kitchen, bathroom and living area. Eco-friendly bamboo floors were laid throughout the cottage and canned lighting was added in the dining and living areas. The cathedral window was restored adding lovely natural light to the area as well.
The historic Cottage is well appointed with comfortable, high quality beds and fine linens. Additionally, it’s uniquely decorated with original art from local artists with a variety of books from local authors (who just happen to be friends!).
The Chef’s kitchen is equipped with all new appliances and the pantry is stocked with staples to accommodate a longer-term rental. Since the owner is an amateur chef, a well-stocked kitchen is a priority! (Even though there are a variety of fabulous restaurants within walking distance.)
The Cottage has two bedrooms (the main bedroom has an adjustable Tempur-Pedic queen bed and the other has a trundle bed with two twin memory foam mattresses). There’s a full bath, and en suite living room area.
The Cottage has various “geek” amenities. There’s a Jambox for music and an Apple TV for live streaming.
There is one parking space by the cottage but plenty of street parking available. The backyard has a six-foot fence ensuring privacy plus there is a small patio with a gas grill. A little further out in the backyard are four Adirondack style chairs and a fire pit – plus the requisite Southern porch with two white rocking chairs.
The Cottage is located in a quiet and peaceful neighborhood in downtown Franklin and has a bit of a “Mayberry” feeling with special occasion parades featuring the local high school marching bands and car dealerships with waving princesses. It is part of one of the original neighborhoods designated “Hincheyville” (you can read a description on the historic marker at the end of the street). It is a short one and a half block walk into downtown Franklin and a 25-30 minute drive into Nashville or to the Nashville airport.
A short walk will also take you to the beautifully renovated Franklin Theater, which hosts great concerts and movies, as well as The Lotz House, and The Carter House. A quick drive will take you to Carnton Plantation (which was made a tourist destination after the success of the New York Time’s bestselling book Widow of the South written by local author Robert Hicks — copy of Robert’s book is in the Cottage).
Although walking is always an option, there is also a trolley that stops at all the major sites, but you need a car to see anything outside the immediate downtown Franklin area.
Other Things of Note
The Battle of Franklin
More than anything else, the Battle of Franklin defines this town and community. The epic “Battle of Franklin” November 30, 1864, is coming up on its 150th anniversary celebration. Experience the informative tours at the Historic Carter House and The Historic Carnton Plantation. Tours are offered at the Center or there is a self-guided tour with maps available at The Franklin Visitor Center, 400 Main Street, Suite 130 (off 4th Ave).
The Franklin Art Crawl happens the first Friday of the month and provides both the novice and the art connoisseur an opportunity to see a sweeping variety of magnificent work, from blown glass to turned wood to mixed media and more.
You can begin at any participating location. The event is free, but a $5 unlimited trolley ticket runs all night to take guests from spot to spot. Many of the locations serve complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres, and are within walking distance.
There are also numerous parks within a short walk from the Cottage: Franklin Bicentennial Park, Jim Warren Park and Pinkerton Park (with exercise stations/path), and a short drive to The Park at Harlinsdale Farm.

Points of Interest
If you’re up for a drive, there are lots of fun places in the surrounding area.
Leiper’s Fork is the only historic village on the Tennessee portion of the Natchez Trace Parkway and offers the quaintness of the past and the convenience of the present with friendly merchants, great country cooking and world-class entertainment.
Arrington Vineyards is a favorite of ours and it’s only about a 20-minute drive. You can take a picnic lunch or dinner, sample some of their fine wines, and hear live music. (It’s owned by Kix Brooks of Brooks and Dunn fame!)
Amish Country in Ethridge, Tenn. is only about a 1-½ hour drive where you will see horse-drawn buggies and you can buy a variety of Amish foods and crafts.
Jack Daniels Distillery is another interesting tour (1 hr and 20 min drive) is located in Lynchburg, Tenn. There’s even a sampling tour but you need to sign up early as it fills up fast!
And then there’s Nashville and Music City!
Surrounding the city, you’ll find lots of interesting places to explore: Cheekwood Botanical Garden, Belle Meade Plantation, The Hermitage (home of Andrew Jackson) and many other points of interest. But the main draw is always music – from the 2nd Ave honkytonks to TPAC (Tennessee Performance Arts Center) there’s always music somewhere in Nashville!
